A man who was in critical condition after being shot in a parking garage near the Indiana Convention Center on May 28 has died.
The man was identified as Brett Scrogham, 23, a recent graduate of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Indianapolis, by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
It’s unclear when Scrogham died; neither the coroner nor the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to questions from IndyStar. A suspect in the shooting is in custody, IMPD told Fox59.
The shooting has prompted a renewed call for action aimed at Mayor Joe Hogsett and comes as Indianapolis continues to reckon with how to address violent crime. It’s far from a new debate: Last year, Gov. Mike Braun floated the idea of state intervention after a deadly July 4 weekend that resulted in two juvenile deaths and three other killings.
“Violence anywhere in our community is unacceptable — especially when it claims the life of an innocent person,” Hogsett said in a statement about the shooting death May 31.
Scrogham graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in finance and real estate and joined Kittle Property Group as a development analyst, according to his LinkedIn. While in college, he was co-president of the real estate club and received 2nd place in a real estate competition for a group proposal on how to best redevelop the former Indiana Women’s Prison site.
