MUNCIE, IN — Muncie Community Schools will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26, due to hazardous weather conditions.
At Ball State University, all Monday classes will be held online, and non-essential employees have been instructed to “work remotely.”
Snowfall in the Muncie area that began on Saturday is believed to have exceeded eight inches in some locations.
Forecasts call for dangerously cold conditions in the area on Monday, with a high temperature for the day only reaching five degrees, and winds of up to 20 mph.
The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency has announced an extreme cold warning for 7 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills as low as 25 below zero.
Muncie Community Schools students will have an “asynchronous e-learning day” on Monday, according to Andy Klotz, MCS chief communications officer.
Ball State University announced late Sunday afternoon that all classes on Monday “will be held online.”
“Instructors should communicate with students on the next steps and expectations for Monday classes,” a release said.
“All non-essential employees should work remotely, to the extent possible,” the document said.
Ball State officials said the university plans to resume “normal operations” at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Delaware County judges on Sunday announced the county court system — for the most part at the Delaware County Justice Center, 3100 S. Tillotson Ave. — will also be closed Monday.
The court system’s probation and CASA departments will also be closed, Kyle Johnson, Delaware County’s chief information officer, said in a release. The Delaware County clerk’s office will also be closed.
It was later announced that all government offices in the Justice Center and the Delaware County Building, in downtown Muncie, will also be closed on Monday.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, offices in Muncie City Hall, with the exception of Muncie City Court, were expected to be open on Monday.
In northwestern Henry County, Shenandoah School Corp. officials announced schools would be closed Monday ,with students on “synchronous virtual learning.”
In Winchester, the Randolph County commissioners have closed all county government offices on Monday.
In Portland, the Jay County Courthouse, and county government annexes, will be closed Monday.
