Deputy clerks Carrie Sanders and Abby Myers — both Republicans — are vying to replace Clerk Julie Roush, who is unable to run for re-election because of term limits. The winner from the GOP primary will face Democratic clerk candidate Karan Benner in the November election.

Tell us about yourself

Myers: Age: 40. Current occupation and any previous political experience: I currently serve as a supervisor in the clerk’s office, where I conduct staff training and onboarding and oversee employees’ daily responsibilities. I have seven years of hands-on experience in the clerk’s office, working in court operations, records management, and election administration. In addition, I serve as an elected precinct committeeman, which has provided me with valuable experience in the political process and community engagement. The city you live in: West Lafayette.

Sanders: Age: 51. Current occupation and any previous political experience: clerk. I have had no political experience. The city you live in: Lafayette.

What are the three biggest issues you’re hearing from constituents in this election cycle?

Myers: The three biggest issues I am hearing from constituents are the need for experienced leadership in the clerk’s office, maintaining trust and transparency in elections, and a general lack of understanding about what the clerk’s office actually does.

Many voters want confidence that the office is being run by someone with real, hands-on experience and an understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities. I also hear concerns about ensuring elections are conducted accurately, transparently and in full compliance with Indiana law.

Additionally, there is a need for better public awareness about the role of the clerk’s office, including its responsibilities in both the court system and election administration. Improving understanding in this area helps build trust and ensures the public knows where to turn for important services.

Sanders: The three things I hear most often are trust, consistency and experience.

First, people want confidence in our elections. They want to know the process is secure, accurate and handled the right way. That trust matters, and it affects everyone in this community.

Second, people expect the courthouse to run smoothly. They value clear communication, timely service and professionalism. They want to know they will be taken care of when they walk through the door or go online.

And third, I hear a lot about experience. People understand this is not a job where you figure it out as you go. They want someone who already knows the system and can step in ready to lead.

How do you plan to address those issues if elected?

Myers: If elected, I will address these issues by bringing experienced, hands-on leadership to the clerk’s office from Day 1. I will implement consistent procedures, prioritize staff training and remain actively involved in daily operations to ensure accuracy and efficiency across the courts and election administration.

To maintain trust and transparency in elections, I will strictly follow Indiana election law while emphasizing preparation, attention to detail and clear communication with the public. I also believe voter education is key to strengthening confidence in the election process.

Finally, I will work to improve public understanding of the clerk’s office by increasing outreach and communication about the services we provide and the role we play in both the court system and election administration. Transparency and accessibility will be a priority in everything we do.

Sanders: I will build on the strong foundation already in place while continuing to move the office forward.

I have over 20 years of experience in our courts and elections office. I was hired by Clerk Betty Michaels, and I am proud to have the support of clerks who have served before and after her. That background gives me a clear understanding of how this office works and the responsibility it carries.

My focus will be accuracy, transparency, and a smooth voter experience. That means clear information, accessible options and helping people feel confident participating. I also believe in strong voter education, especially for young people, so they stay engaged in their community.

I am prepared to lead, solve problems and serve this community with professionalism and consistency from the start.
