The backup quarterback role is one of the positional battles taking place during Indianapolis Colts training camp. However, the play from Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard has been sporadic, and that continued on Thursday night.
Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan wrote in his post-practice takeaways that “as we’ve grown accustomed to this camp, the production for the offense quickly waned once Jones exited.”
Joel Erickson of the Indy Star wrote that this competition has been “uneven,” noting Richardson’s struggles with the snap, while Leonard “tends to hold the ball too long in the pocket.”
According to Erickson, Richardson was just 3-for-12 passing, taking a “handful of sacks,” while throwing an interception. Bowen called the performance “woeful.”
Leonard’s play was more promising but far from clean, with Bowen noting that he threw an interception. Leonard was 10-of-15 passing, Erickson noted.
The two quarterbacks have been splitting reps with the second-team offense. Shane Steichen said after practice that the most consistent player would win the job.
“It’s back-and-forth right now,” said Steichen.
