Anthony Richardson has struggled to find consistency during his Indianapolis Colts career up to this point, and that up-and-down play has continued into this year’s training camp.
According to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, Richardson took only five team reps during Saturday’s practice and went 2-for-3, although he threw an interception.
In the previous practice, which took place under the lights, Richardson was just 3-for-12 passing.
Richardson has also struggled to handle numerous snaps as well.
On Saturday, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter discussed Richardson’s play, noting that more consistency was needed. That not only applies to Richardson, but the rest of the players on the second and third team offenses.
“He’s still working through it,” Cooter said, via The Athletic’s James Boyd. “There’s really good days, there’s really good periods. Like all of our guys, you’re gonna make a mistake here and there and (we) try to go fix that thing, clean that thing up. So we’re working through that.”
Cooter also noted the challenges that Lou Anarumo’s disguise-heavy defense has given the second and third offensive units as well.
Richardson and Leonard are competing for the backup quarterback role this summer. On Thursday, Shane Steichen didn’t provide any specific insight into where things stand, but did say that the competition was “back-and-forth” at that time.
Richardson’s trade request remains on the table, but as GM Chris Ballard said, the Colts are just going to give him away.
