Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver Josh Downs missed Saturday’s practice with a groin injury, according to multiple reports.
The extent of the injury or how long Downs could be sidelined has not yet been reported at this time.
The Colts already find themselves quite thin at wide receiver with Alec Pierce still on the PUP list following offseason ankle surgery. Even with Downs on the field over the last week-plus, the depth of the wide receiver room has come into question.
Without Downs — and Laquon Treadwell — on Saturday, the Colts’ first-team wide receiver unit consisted of Ashton Dulin, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Anthony Gould.
Downs is expected to see more opportunities this season. With Michael Pittman in Pittsburgh, Downs, Pierce, and Tyler Warren will shoulder the workload when it comes to making up for his absence.
But along with more potential targets, how Downs is utilized in Steichen’s offense could change as well, with more reps lined up outside possibly coming his way.
