Homers, gems and steals: Vote for IndyStar softball players of the week (Sectionals)

IndyStar will be recognizing the top softball players in Indiana with our players of the week poll.

Congratulations to Center Grove’s Addison Wolff on being voted Player of the Week for May 18-23! The senior outfielder scored a run in all three games she played last week and notched hits in two of the three. She had a couple in an 8-1 win over Mt. Vernon, then tacked on another vs. Shelbyville. Wolff also stole two bases.

Here were the top performers from sectionals.

Morgan Bricker, Pendleton Heights

Bricker was lights out against Greenfield Central and Mt. Vernon in the sectional, pitching back-to-back shutouts with only six hits allowed, one walk issued and 14 batters struck out. She shut out the Cougars on one hit and fanned nine in her win over the Marauders. The senior has allowed only two earned runs and totaled 39 strikeouts since returning to the circle in May (41.1 innings). 

Lucy George, Western

The junior pitcher led the Panthers to their first 4A sectional championship with three straight complete games. She allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits with nine strikeouts against West Lafayette Harrison, punched out 17 and allowed only one run in a 3-1 win over McCutcheon, then pitched five scoreless with nine strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Lafayette Jefferson in the final.

Olivia Jaromin, Yorktown

The junior doubled and homered twice in a 10-0 win over Hamilton Heights. She scored three runs and drove in four RBIs in the win. Jaromin homered and scored an additional run in an 8-2 win over Jay County.

Callie Johnson, Center Grove

The freshman helped push the defending 4A state runner-up Trojans into the next round, clocking four hits, eight RBIs and a run scored across three games. She had a double and three RBis in the final vs. Mooresville and a triple plus three RBIs in the semis vs. Decatur Central.

Chloe Junkersfeld, Carmel

The freshman was brilliant in a Sectional 8 semifinals loss to Westfield, finishing 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, a walk, four RBIs and a run scored. Junkersfeld was also perfect on three opportunities in the outfield. She finished her first varsity season batting .403 with seven doubles, three homers, 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored. 

Tessa Kramer, Lawrence North

Kramer led the Wildcats back to regionals with two strong pitching performances. She clocked a five-hit shutout vs. North Central in game one, then held Lawrence Central to two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in the final. She also picked up two hits herself, including an RBI double vs. LC.

Addison Lafree, Bloomfield

Lafree steadily increased her hit total over three sectional games. She doubled in a 4-1 win over Cloverdale, clocks two hits (plus an RBI) against Shakamak, then notched three hits (two doubles) and an RBI in a 13-5 win over perennial power Clay City. The senior scored a run in all three games.

Ally Lewis, Western Boone

Lewis pitched five scoreless innings in a 10-0 win over Rossville, then went a full seven against Seeger, allowing only one run on six hits in the 5-1 win. She totaled 17 strikeouts for the week and issued only three walks. She had two hits and three runs scored vs. Rossville, and a hit and a run scored against North Montgomery and Seeger. 

Jaleigh Lindley, Terre Haute North

Lindley delivered in the circle and at the dish. For the former, she allowed only one run on six hits in 12 innings of work against Bloomington North (one run on two hits, nine strikeouts) and Martinsville (four-hit shutout, eight strikeouts). As for the latter, she collected a couple hits and accumulated three RBIs. 

Reese Mahannah, Westfield

The senior delivered in the clutch twice for the eventual Sectional 8 champions. She had a critical seventh-inning triple in a 5-4 win over Zionsville, then executed a walk-off squeeze bunt in the semifinals vs. Carmel. She also hit a three-run homer against the Greyhounds and wrapped up her tournament with an RBI double vs. Noblesville.

Autumn Muncy, Danville

Muncy strung together three solid outings for the Warriors. She struck out six in three perfect innings against Frankfort, allowed only one run on two hits with 17 strikeouts against Guerin, then punched Danville’s ticket to regionals with a two-hit shutout of Lebanon, wherein she issued only one walk and struck out eight.

Annabelle Richter, Franklin

The senior delivered a walk-off base hit to lift the Grizzly Cubs to a 6-5 win over Columbus North in the sectional championship game. That capped a two-hit, three-RBI performance by Richter, who also had a hit in a 13-3 win over East Central. 

Lainey Sandlin, Seymour

Sandlin etched her name into Seymour athletics lore, ripping a walk-off single to secure the first sectional championship in program history with a 7-6 upset of Floyd Central. Sandlin was 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI and two runs scored. She also had three hits against both New Albany (two doubles) and Bedford North Lawrence.

Etta Schroering, Brownsburg

The sophomore struck out two of the three batters she faced against Brownsburg, then delivered back-to-back clutch performances against Avon (7 innings, 1 unearned run, 4 hits, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk) and Plainfield (7 innings, three runs (two earned), 8 hits, 6 strikeouts, 3 walks). 

Ella Sproul, Edgewood

Sproul was the Mustangs’ spark at the plate. She doubled and scored a run vs.Speedway, doubled and homered vs. Northview (four RBIs, two runs scored), then went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs against Cascade.

Cara Steele, New Palestine

Steele delivered in the clutch vs. Indian Creek, launching a two-out, two-strike seventh-inning grand slam to lift the Dragons to a 7-4 win. She also had a solo homer earlier in the game, and followed that performance with a two-RBI effort vs. Roncalli in the semifinals. Steele notched her fourth hit of the week vs. Greenwood in the sectional championship. 

Tegan Tripp, Lake Central

Tripp’s two-RBI third-inning single was the difference in the sectional semifinals vs. Munster then she came through with another single, plus a home run and two RBIs in a 3-1 win over Crown Point in the championship game.

Sadie Weliver, Clinton Prairie

Weliver totaled seven hits, two RBIs and six runs scored in three sectional tournament games. She accounted for three of those hits against Clinton Central, and scored three runs in a 14-0 win over Frontier.

Hannah Wittgren, Eastern Hancock

The senior had a hit and an RBI vs. Heritage Christian and a hit and a run scored vs. Christel House. She totaled two hits, including RBI double, in a 4-1 win over Triton Central in the championship game.

Camryn Wolfe, Monrovia

Wolfe went 5-for-7 on the week (.714) with two singles, two doubles, a dinger, seven RBIs, six runs and three stolen bases. She accounted for three hits and five RBIs vs. Covenant Christian, then drove in a couple more RBIs against Cardinal Ritter.
