May 31, 1904: “The graves in the South Bend city cemetery of Mr. and Mrs. James McKinley, grandparents of the late President William McKinley, were decorated with flowers on Memorial Day by the women of Norman Eddy Relief corps. Mr. and Mrs. McKinley were early residents of this county and they died on the same day, Aug. 20, 1847, which was also the anniversary of their wedding. They were buried side by side in a quiet corner of the old cemetery.”
June 1, 1910: “South Bend will see its second big circus of the season, Saturday, June 18, when the Ringling Bros. show will appear in the city. Performances will be given in the afternoon and evening and a big street parade will be given in the morning.”
June 2, 1924: “LAPORTE, Ind., June 2. – When four “kittens” she has mothered begin to chatter, eat nuts andjump from tree to tree, Tabby, a house cat at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Swanson, is due for a maternal shock. Two weeks ago the cat gave birth to kittens, which disappeared. A neighbor shot a red squirrel and discovered later that some bushy-tailed orphans were left. He gave them to Mrs. Tabby, whose motherly attentions to them have been assiduous.”
June 3, 1931: “Miss Virginia Przybysz, an eight-year-old singer, and Walter Dopkowski, bird imitator and warbler, were the feature of The Tribune’s Polish hour heard over WSBT-WFAM, The Tribune’s broadcasting stations, Tuesday night at 9:30 o’clock.”
June 4, 1941: “Two South Bend teachers whose careers have run close parallels will retire from service today, the last day of the 1940-41 school year.Miss Katherine L. Klingel, 417 North Main street, an instructor in Central High school since 1907, ends her 34th year in the city school system and her 38th year of public school teaching.Miss Florence Schreyer, 116 East Bartlett street, teacher in the Elder school, retires today and 39 years of teaching in South Bend schools.The retiring teachers attended and graduated from the same elementary and high schools here. Miss Klingel graduated from Madison school in 1888 and from South Bend Central High school in 1893. Miss Schreyer graduated from Madison in 1891 and from South Bend High school in 1895.”
June 5, 1950: “The new Center township fire station on Kern road, two miles south of the city, was dedicated Sunday afternoon at ceremonies attended by State Fire Marshal Alex Houghland, of Indianapolis, who was principal speaker. About 400 persons attended the ceremony over which Robert L. Holderman, chief of the Center township fire department, presided.”
June 6, 1963: “Penn High School employees today were busy installing the figures on a new track and field record board which was born as the result of an idea of Principal R. James Risk and the design of Anthony D. Portolese, wood shop instructor, and Jay Frantz, publications advisor. Risk fostered the idea for the 8 by 10-foot plaque which has been installed on the west wall of the school gymnasium.”
