About 407 Bloomington South Panther students walked across the stage, received a diploma and later turned their tassels, becoming high school graduates.

The audience listened to three speakers: Alice Racek, Ian Quick and Alaina Maki.

Before graduation, Racek shared that her favorite parts of high school were trying new things like sports and debate that allowed her to learn more about herself. She played basketball and lacrosse, was involved in varsity debate, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and served as president of the student council. She also started the fiber arts club with her friends. Racek will attend Indiana University as a Wells Scholar to study international policy. She is one of two South students selected for the full-ride IU Wells Scholarship.

Before commencement, Quick said playing football has been the most formative aspect of his life and has challenged him in many ways. He said he has formed some of the best relationships of his teen years with fellow football players. Quick plans to attend Purdue University to study engineering.

Maki, before graduation, shared that her favorite high school memories were the moments spent with friends she met through basketball (with the team winning basketball sectionals and regionals), marching band, concert band and activities including playing Euchre with her friends. Maki will attend Indiana University to study law and public policy. She aspires to attend law school to study environmental law.

The majority of graduates from MCCSC high schools received academic or technical honors diplomas. While many graduates plan to attend 2- and 4-year colleges, others are pursuing vocational training, entering the workforce or enlisting in the military.
