INDIANAPOLIS — For the fourth consecutive season, the Colts will have joint practices against two separate teams during training camp.
Indianapolis will travel to New England for a joint practice with the Patriots before the teams’ preseason game Aug. 13, and the Colts will also hold two joint practices with the Falcons at Grand Park before the two teams play each other on Aug. 22.
Steichen’s preference for joint practices is part of a league-wide movement towards more joint practices.
NFL coaches like joint practices because it gives them a chance to test their starters against another team while being able to control more of the situations the players face, reducing the risk of injury and allowing coaches to tailor the work they get.
Indianapolis has traditionally held joint practices with two teams during Steichen’s tenure. The Colts have held road practices at Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Baltimore while Steichen’s the head coach. Indianapolis has hosted the Bears, Cardinals and Packers at Grand Park in the first three seasons.
