Westfield edges Center Grove for second straight state title at IHSAA boys state golf meet

CARMEL — The downpour of rain on hole 18 fit the theatrics of the team race at the IHSAA boys state golf meet on Wednesday.

Center Grove was up two strokes over defending champion Westfield through 17 holes before the senior duo of Hudson Kutchma and Ryan Cesare closed out the show for the Shamrocks.

Kutchma converted a birdie before Cesare chipped in for par on the final hole. The Marian commit punched the air and let out a scream that marked Westfield’s return to state title prominence.

It was emotion fit for a second consecutive state championship. The crowning moment in a state team run built on tranquility. Westfield shot 297 as a team on Wednesday, which increased their two-day total to 16-over-par 592 and edged the 593 scored by runner-up Center Grove.

Guerin Catholic (596) placed third, while Castle (600) took home fourth place. Hamilton Southeastern (608) rounded out the top five.

“It was pretty special,” Kutchma said. “Ryan (Cesare) is one of the first guys I ever met on our golf team and have been best friends since. It just means the world for both of us to, basically, help our team win a state championship.”

After Kutchma outdueled Guerin Catholic senior Eli Wessel for the individual crown in a two-hole playoff and after the Shamrocks completed their post-meet obligations, the team took a celebratory plunge in the pond near the entrance of the Prairie View Golf Club.

The Shamrocks had every right to glow with jubilation. They entered the second day of the state meet faced with a four-shot deficit after they shot a 7-over-par 295 on day one. That was second to Center Grove, which fired a 3-over-par 291.

On the second day of state, on the 18th hole, they jumped in front when the pressure mounted.

“Obviously, you’re out there and you’re standing there on … 17, you start doing the math and of course you’re getting messages of who’s doing what and there’s always some sort of action on 18,” said Westfield coach Josh Bryant. “We kind of felt like we were either tied or one back when Hudson was on. He had a good number to go for green and two on 18, and we just decided if the math says we think it might be one back then we’re going to ahead and hit the golf shot and he executed it, and it ultimately I think that was what swung it our way.”

Westfield’s 2026 state run didn’t mirror the dominance that they showcased on the second day of state in 2025, but it had its own special flair.

Last season, the Shamrocks finished 8-under-par as a team, 30 strokes better than runner-up Homestead. This season’s festivities had more drama, more adversity to overcome in a quest for more state hardware.

Kutchma, Cesare, junior Brayden Worthington, senior Mitchell Keene and sophomore Keaton Knott were ready for that special challenge.

Kutchma became the second-straight Westfield boys golfer to take home the top individual prize, a year after then-senior Will Harvey took the crown. He fired a two-day total of 142, which was 2-under-par. He helped steer Westfield’s latest championship voyage.

“I didn’t really look at the scoreboard all day,” Kutchma said. “I mean, I kind of just told myself if I shoot even or one over (par), it’ll be good, but I didn’t really think I was going to have to play in a playoff against Eli (Wessel).

“I wasn’t really thinking individual at all because I think I was … 3-over going into 18 and I wasn’t thinking I could win or anything like that.”

Worthington tied for 15th with a score of 149, while Cesare tied for 19th with a 150. Keene tied for 25th with a 151 and Knott finished in 65th place with a 160.

After finishing as state runners-up from 2022 to 2024, the Shamrocks have reached the pinnacle of state title excellence and fended off all challengers that dared to dethrone them over the last two seasons.

On Wednesday, they were a united bunch. A group that put together a scrappy performance and left no doubt that they are the rightful kings in the Indiana high school boys golf realm.

“I think that they really leaned on the experience from last year when they came out,” Bryant said. “We had three guys back from that team last year and they had a lot of confidence going into the second day.”
