Chris Ballard's resume as Indianapolis Colts general manager

Now eliminated from the playoffs, the Indianapolis Colts enter another offseason with major question marks, the biggest of which is around the future of general manager Chris Ballard.

Ballard is currently in his ninth season as the Colts’ GM. Not including the team’s Week 17 matchup with Jacksonville, the Colts have a record of 70-76-1 during that span.

This includes just four winning seasons — maybe five depending on how the final two weeks go this year — and two seasons with double-digit wins.

Over that nine-year timeframe, the Colts have just two playoff appearances and one playoff win. Their last playoff appearance came in 2020, and their last victory was in 2018.

Under Ballard, the Colts have the fifth-longest playoff drought of any team in the NFL.

The Colts have also never won a division title with Ballard at the helm. Since 2017, when Ballard took over, the other three AFC South teams have each won the division crown at least twice.

After making almost no roster changes from 2023 to 2024, Ballard pivoted in a major way this offseason, which included signing Charvarius Ward and Cam Bynum to big contracts. Ballard also went out and got Daniel Jones and then made the blockbuster in-season trade for Sauce Gardner.

However, the outcome for the 2025 season remained the same for the Colts as it did in previous years. In fact, the Colts missed the playoffs this year in rare fashion, going from 8-2 to not even making the postseason at all.

Over the Colts’ last three draft classes, which include 29 selections, only Tyler Warren, Laiatu Latu, Tanor Bortolini, Matt Goncalves, and Josh Downs are starters on either offense or defense. Nine of those picks are no longer on the team not even three years later.

Injuries are certainly a part of the equation this season, and perhaps there are circumstances where that could buy the GM additional time. But I don’t know if that’ll be the case given Ballard’s track record at this point.

With this resume, most GMs would have been out a while ago.
