How a stat correction led to Caitlin Clark setting a WNBA record, more added in Fever win

INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark has set dozens of records over the past few years. But now the Indiana Fever superstar can say she broke a record two days after the fact.

The WNBA announced Sunday that Clark has been awarded two additional assists from Friday’s overtime loss to the Washington Mystics, making her the first player in league history to finish multiple games with 30 or more points and 10 or more assists.

Clark finished with 32 points and 10 assists vs. Washington. She had 31 points and 12 assists vs. Chicago as a rookie.

The stat change was made following a request from the Fever to the WNBA league office to review the film.

Clark’s first added assist came on a kick out to Monique Billings for a corner 3 in the second quarter. The second was on a hand-off to Kelsey Mitchell for a triple from the wing that made it a one-score game with 30 seconds left.

Beyond the trivia surrounding the timing, Clark said this record isn’t especially meaningful or significant to her.

“I always take pride in being able to set my teammates up for success,” she said following Sunday’s 89-78 win over the Seattle Storm. “I think that allows our team to get flowing and I can do a really good job of that.”

Clark broke a couple other records in more traditional fashion Sunday with her 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in 23:42. She is the all-time leader for most career games (11) with at least 20 points and 10 assists and, per ESPN Insights, is the first player in WNBA history to clear 20 points and 10 assists in fewer than 25 minutes played.

One more stat nugget: Clark has logged 20 points and five assists in four straight games, tied for the longest such streak to start a season.

“I only played 23 minutes and had 10 assists, so I think it shows the potential of what this team can do offensively,” Clark said. “They have to make the shots for me to get the assists, so half of it is them and I got to set them up for success. I just try to take what the defense gives me as best I can.”

Clark continued to say she could “probably” limit her turnovers (she had five vs. the Storm) and thinks the Fever can generate more transition assists, especially once Aliyah Boston (lower leg) is back to full health.

“I’m really excited about this team’s potential going forward,” Clark said.

Through four games, Clark — who missed the second half of last season with groin and ankle injuries — is averaging 25.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists. She’s shooting over 42% from the field and is 9 for 21 from 3 over her past two games.

Asked what she’s seen from Clark thus far, coach Stephanie White pointed to her “burst.”

“You can see it, not just in her taking off with the ball in her hands, but you can see it in lifting her shot,” White said. “She looks strong. She looks loaded in her actions. You can tell by the way she gets to the free-throw line, too. Her movement patterns and burst are back.”

The Fever (2-2) host the Portland Fire at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
