IHSA girls soccer: State champions to be crowned on biggest day for the sport

Three state champions are set to be crowned in Illinois girls high school soccer, with the conclusion of the Illinois High School Association state tournaments in Naperville.

The Griffins of Glen Carbon (Father McGivney), in their first-ever state tournament, defeated the Lady Cardinals of Pleasant Plains 3-0 in the 1A state final

Morton High School’s girls team, competing in their inaugural state tournament, is set to face the Tigers of Crystal Lake (Central) at 4:45 p.m. in the Class 2A title game. Crystal Lake won the 2A championship in 2024 and lost in a super-sectional last season.

In 3A, the championship game sees seven-time state champion Winnetka (New Trier) take on Naperville (Central) at 7 p.m.

Here’s a look at how it all went down, with summaries added throughout the day.

Class 1A: Father McGivney 3, Pleasant Plains 0

A dominant performance by the Griffins of Father McGivney helped deliver the school their first state championship in their first appearance in a state tournament.

Freshman Kinley Dettmers got things going in the 18th minute with her second goal of the tournament before Arkansas State recruit Natalie Beck added insurance from the penalty spot in the 25th minute. Mira Ahlvers delivered a 61st minute goal to pad the lead in the second half, helping to knock off a previously undefeated Lady Cardinal team.

The Griffins hail from Glen Carbon in the Metro East suburbs of St. Louis. The Lady Cardinals, located west of Springfield, had two state tournaments on their resume prior to this year, having finished third in Class 1A in 2023. The runner-up finish is their best performance ever at a state tournament in girls soccer.
