On June 10, the Lee County School District announced a new agreement with the University of Florida that will allow high school students to enroll in dual-enrollment courses through the university.
Qualifying high school juniors and seniors can now register for online undergraduate courses taught by UF faculty. The courses are free for participating students, and earned credits can be transferred to UF and other public and private universities across the country.
Students can register for a variety of classes, ranging from advertising to engineering to microbiology. In UF’s catalogue of dual-enrollment courses, there are opportunities to fulfill general education requirements in science, humanities, composition and mathematics.
Registered students are allowed a maximum of two dual-enrollment classes per semester.
“Our students are more than ready to meet the challenge of UF’s top-tier curriculum,” Dr Nathan Shaker, Chief Academic Officer for the school district, said in the announcement.
Already, 68 students are enrolled to start taking classes in August, according to the announcement. The next opportunity to register will be for the spring semester.
Eligible students must have a minimum 3.6 unweighted cumulative high school GPA and reach the minimum score on one of the following standardized tests:
UF joins Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida SouthWestern State College and Barry University in offering dual-enrollment courses to Lee County students.
“We are excited to welcome Lee County to UF Dual Enrollment as we continue expanding opportunities for students across the state,” Nico Rose, assistant provost and senior director of operations for UF’s Office of Teaching and Technology, said in the announcement.
