Derek Allen Jr., Wakulla grad, to continue winning culture at 27 years old

Derek Allen Jr. always believed he would one day return home to Wakulla — he just didn’t expect it would happen this soon.

At just 27 years old, the former War Eagles quarterback has taken over as Wakulla’s head football coach, stepping into one of the area’s most tradition-rich programs and aiming to carry forward a winning culture built over decades.

“I always knew that I wanted to come back to Wakulla, and I honestly didn’t know that it was going to happen this fast, but here we are,” Allen told the Tallahassee Democrat.

Allen inherits the program following the departure of longtime coach Scott Klees, whose nearly three-decade tenure established Wakulla as a consistent contender. Filling that role is no small task, but Allen — a former player who helped contribute to the program’s success — embraces the challenge.

A graduate of Florida A&M, Allen previously served as an assistant coach at Blountstown and Harris County before landing his first head coaching job. Four months into his tenure, he said the transition has gone smoothly.

Allen knows the expectations.

“I’m from Wakulla. I know what the standard is,” he said. “It is never going to change. We’re just going to keep on chugging and keep doing the things the right way.”

As a player, Allen was part of Wakulla’s 2015-16 state championship team, backing up former standout quarterback Feleipe Franks before taking over as the starter his senior year. That experience, he said, continues to shape him as a coach.

He also maintains a strong connection with Klees, leaning on lessons learned during his playing days.

“The way he prepares you for life and the game of football itself,” Allen said. “It’s going to be hard days. There are going to be days when you’re getting knocked down, but you’ve got to get right back up.”

Despite leading the program, Allen’s youth has helped him quickly connect with his players. His relatability and energy bring a different feel to the program compared to his predecessor, without sacrificing its competitive edge.

Senior wide receiver Jarrell Randolph, who has known Allen since their rec league days, said the new coach’s personality stands out.

“Probably more relaxed and more fun because he is a bit younger than Coach Klees,” Randolph said. “I love Coach Klees, but he is a bit more on the intense side.”

Even with a shift in style, the expectations remain unchanged inside the program.

There is no talk of rebuilding at Wakulla — only continuing success.

Senior defensive back Jaylen Jones, a Jacksonville State recruit, believes Allen’s background gives the War Eagles an advantage as they pursue another playoff run.

“He’s a great coach,” Jones said. “He has a lot of experience in coaching, and even though this is his first head coaching job, he knows what it takes. I think we’re going to go pretty far in the playoffs.”

With a familiar face now leading the program, Wakulla is betting that its future success will look a lot like its past — rooted in tradition, fueled by belief and guided by one of its own.
