Investigators said a 35-year-old man was driving a sport utility vehicle west on U.S. 98 when he failed to properly negotiate a curve. The SUV traveled onto the north shoulder and struck a tree.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Authorities reported the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
