Why police delivered packages in Grosse Ile, Flat Rock this month

Some Downriver police officers have taken on an unexpected role this month delivering packages.

On Wednesday afternoon, May 27, Grosse Ile Police Department arrested a delivery driver after recovering suspected heroin, according to a post by the Grosse Ile Police Department.

The driver appeared to be asleep behind the wheel on Waterway Drive while the vehicle was running with packages inside, according to the post. Police responded after a resident called and reported suspicious activity.

The midnight shift officers delivered every package in the van, which appeared to be Amazon packages in police photos, to the intended Grosse Ile destination, according to the post.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Free Press request for comment.

The driver was arrested and lodged pending charges, according to the post.

Grosse Ile Police Department did not immediately respond to respond to Free Press questions.

This is not the first instance of a Downriver police agency aiding in package delivery after calls about a driver this month.

On May 20, the Flat Rock Police Department responded to a call about an Amazon delivery driver in a residential area yelling on their cell phone while throwing packages off the Amazon van, according to a post by the department.

An investigation found the driver quit her job mid-shift and threw numerous packages into the street, according to the post.

Amazon deputized a sergeant and two officers as temporary delivery drivers, and they recovered, secured and delivered all the packages, according to the post.
