The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office said a serious crash on Sunday, June 21 that injured an adult and two children remains under investigation, with impairment a suspected factor.
According to a Monday, June 22 update from Sheriff Matt Leirstein, the crash took place on East Robinson Road in McKinley Township. A vehicle, containing a 31-year-old Petoskey resident and two children ages 8 and 6, left the roadway, struck an embankment, went airborne and hit a tree.
The occupants sustained significant injuries. The children were treated locally before being transferred for advanced care.
Emmet County deputies investigating the crash processed the scene, completed a full crash reconstruction, and coordinated with medical providers and assisting agencies. Investigators are still working to determine the extent of impairment, including pending toxicology results, and if potential criminal charges are appropriate.
“This is an ongoing and serious investigation involving two young children who were injured, and our focus is on ensuring that all the facts are gathered accurately and thoroughly,” Leirstein wrote in the Facebook update. “Our deputies and investigators are committed to completing a comprehensive investigation and following the evidence wherever it leads. We encourage the public to rely on the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office mobile application and official social media channels for accurate and verified updates related to this incident.”
Assisting agencies include Emmet County EMS, the Emmet County Road Commission, the Pellston Fire Department and first responders.
