SHEBOYGAN COUNTY – More road closures are beginning soon at a major interchange on Interstate 43 near Sheboygan.
In addition to ongoing I-43 road resurfacing between the town of Wilson and the town of Sheboygan that has led to lane closures and congestion during peak travel, ramps connecting the interstate to State 23 will temporarily close for bridge work, too.
The southbound I-43 ramps at State 23 will close on June 29, and the northbound ramps will close on July 6, both for 35 days.
This major summer construction is part of a $21 million rehabilitation project for the interstate going through part of Sheboygan County. Although the ramp closures will impact Fourth of July weekend travel, they’ll hopefully be done ahead of the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge, returning to Sheboygan’s shores Aug. 7-9 for its fourth year.
The powerboat racing event, now under the International Hot Rod Association, has previously drawn several thousand visitors to the area for the weekend.
Full ramp closures also expected on June 23
The I-43 northbound off ramp to State 42 and the I-43 southbound on ramp from State 42 will be fully closed for paving from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 23.
Detours for ramp closures starting June 29
Drivers wanting to take the I-43 southbound connection to State 23 east should instead take the State 23 westbound exit, get off at County Road Y toward Kohler and get back onto State 23 going east.
The detour for the State 23 westbound connection to the I-43 southbound ramp will be to continue west on State 23, exit County Road Y toward Kohler, get back onto State 23 going east and get onto the I-43 southbound ramp.
Detours for ramp closures starting July 6
Northbound traffic trying to exit I-43 to go west on State 23 should exit at State 42 in the town of Sheboygan, loop around two roundabouts, get back onto I-43 going south and take the State 23 exit going west.
The detour for eastbound traffic on State 23 to the I-43 northbound ramp will be to exit at Taylor Drive, turn left on Taylor Drive, and drive west on State 23 before getting onto I-43 going north.
