FSU baseball loses to St. John's in Tallahassee Regional opener

The No. 10 Florida State Seminoles lost to the St. John’s Red Storm on Friday in the first game of the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium. It is FSU’s first loss in the regional round under Link Jarrett.

FSU (38-18) has lost its last three games and will face a tough path to winning the regional. They will have to win four games over the next three days to reach the Super Regional. They will have ace Wes Mendes ready to start on Saturday.

The Seminoles led 5-2 entering the eighth inning, but their top two relievers were unable to protect it. Chris Knier and John Abraham both pitched in the inning, allowing three runs to score on a homer, two walks, a single, two wild pitches, and a passed ball.

FSU had plenty of chances to extend its lead throughout the game, but went 5-22 with runners on and 2-11 with runners in scoring positions. They stranded nine runners and hit into two double plays, including one to end the game.

FSU baseball loses to St. John’s

The Seminols got the tying run to scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but they were unable to get it done with Eli Putnam grounding into a game-ending double play and stunning FSU. The Seminoles led 5-2 entering the eighth inning before St. John’s scored four straight runs to pull off the upset.

FSU trails St. John’s 6-5 in the bottom of the 9th

Brodie Purcell was able to get the job done, getting a pop-up to end the top of the ninth with FSU down one run. Brayden Dowd is due up to start the inning.

FSU makes a pitching change (St. John’s 6, FSU 5, top 9)

John Abraham’s day is done for FSU, with Brodie Purcell entering the game with two outs in the ninth and a runner on first. Abraham allowed one run in 1.2 innings on two hits, two walks, and two wild pitches.

St. John’s takes the lead (St. John’s 6, FSU 5, top 9)

The Red Storm have come all the way back and taken their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth with a one-out single, with the runner barely beating the throw from Brayden Dowd in center. St. John’s started the inning with a single before they stole second. They have scored four straight runs.

FSU strands another runner (FSU 5, St. John’s 5 end 8th)

This game is tied entering the ninth inning after FSU stranded its eighth runner of the game in the eighth. Gabe Fraser started the inning with a single and was left there. Carter McCulley started trying to bunt him over before working a 3-1 count, getting called for a pitch clock violation, and striking out. Cal Fisher popped up to short, and John Stuetzer lined out to the center fielder. The Seminoles are 4-19 with runners on.

FSU escapes with the game tied (FSU 5, St. John’s 5 mid 8th)

John Stuetzer once again delivered for FSU, saving them again in the field in the eighth inning. Gabe Fraser was unable to catch a pop-up in shallow left with the bases loaded. Stuetzer was able to pick the ball up and throw the runner out at home, keeping the game tied with two outs in the inning.

Cal Fisher was able to end the inning on a groundball, getting the out at third. St. John’s scored three runs on two hits, two walks, and a passed ball.

St. John’s ties the game (FSU 5, St. John’s 5 top 8th)

St. John’s has tied the game in the top of the eighth with no outs. After FSU had played clean defense, it stopped in the inning with John Abraham throwing two wild pitches and a Hunter Carns passed ball, allowing two runs to score and putting the go-ahead run on second.

The Red Storm has made it a one-run game in the top of the eighth after a wild pitch allowed a runner to score from third, with the tying run making it to second. There are still no outs for John Abraham.

St. John’s has put the tying run aboard here in the eighth inning with no outs after a walk and a single put runners at the corners. FSU responded by making a pitching change and bringing in John Abraham to try to protect the lead. It is his first appearance since May 8, when he hurt his oblique.

The Red Storm are not going away and made it a two-run game in the top of the eighth with a leadoff home run by Dylan Fitzsimmons. It is their second homer of the game and eighth hit.

FSU wastes a leadoff walk (FSU 5, St. John’s 2 end 7th)

The Seminoles have once again struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities. That happened again in the seventh when Hunter Carns worked a leadoff walk, but was erased when Ben Barrett hit into a double play. FSU 2-10 with runners in scoring position and has stranded seven runners.

Chris Knier has settled in (FSU 5, St. John’s 2 mid 7th)

After struggling in the sixth, Chris Knier looked much better for FSU in the seventh inning. He retired St. John’s in order, picking up his second strikeout.

Brayden Dowd adds on for FSU (FSU 5, St. John’s 2 end 6th)

Brayden Dowd had to settle for a two-out RBI double after the St. John’s left fielder got his glove on a ball over the fence, but couldn’t complete the catch, robbing Dowd of a homer but still allowing him to reach. FSU scored two runs in the inning, the first time either team has scored more than one run at a time.

Cal Fisher delivers for FSU (FSU 4, St. John’s 2 bottom 6th)

The Seminoles, who have played great defense, took advantage of a St. John’s error in the bottom of the sixth. Carter McCulley reached on a single, and FSU had the hit-and-run on with Cal Fisher at the plate. He singled to right, but the ball got under the outfielder’s glove and allowed McCulley to score and Fisher to get to second.

The hit chased St. John’s starter Liam O’Leary from the game. He allowed four runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings on seven hits and a season-high four walks. He recorded six strikeouts and is responsible for the runner on second.

Chris Knier escapes the jam (FSU 3, St. John’s 2 mid 6th)

Chris Knier gave up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced, and the Seminoles looked to be in danger. He responded with a grounder that FSU’s defense turned into a double play, and ended the inning with a strikeout after FSU intentionally walked Adam Agresti with the tying run on third.

FSU makes a pitching change

The Seminoles are going to the bullpen, calling for Chris Knier to replace Bryson Moore to start the sixth inning. Moore, who threw a season-high 88 pitches, allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

FSU was unable to respond to St. John’s run in the top of the fifth, going down in order with two strikeouts. It is the second time this game that they have gone down in order.

Bryson Moore gave up one run in the fifth, but that was all as he ended the inning with his sixth strikeout of the game to strand a runner at second and preserve the one-run lead. He has thrown a season-high 88 pitches.

The Red Storm is fighting back and cut FSU’s lead in half with a single off the right field wall, driving in Will Cowan, who started the inning with a double. It is their first run since the second inning.

For the third time in this game, FSU scored one run in an inning but stranded two runners. The Seminoles are 1-7 with runners in scoring position and 2-11 with runners on, leaving six runners on base.

Brayden Down added some insurance in the fourth inning, hitting a two-out single to score Gabe Fraser, allowing Dowd to get to second and put two runners in scoring position. It was FSU’s first hit with a runner in scoring position after starting 0-5.

Bryson Moore retired St. John’s in order in the top of the fourth inning. Bryaden Dowd made a nice catch near the wall to end the inning. Moore, who is normally limited to 86 pitches, has thrown 69 pitches and needed just nine in the fourth inning.

For the first time this game, FSU was unable to score a run in the bottom of the third inning. Both of FSU’s runs have come on solo home runs, and they have already stranded four runners.

Hunter Carns does it again for FSU (FSU 2, St. John’s 1 mid 3rd)

For the second inning, FSU has ended the inning with a caught stealing. Jon LeGrande beat the throw, but Gabe Fraser kept the tag on and got the out when he came off the base. FSU has already recorded four outs on the bases through three innings.

St. John’s is an aggressive team on the bases, and FSU has made them pay. The Seminoles erased a one-out double in the third inning with Bryson Moore picking the runner off second. It was costly, as the next batter hit a single. It is already the third out FSU has recorded on the bases.

In both innings of this game, FSU has hit a leadoff home run, but stranded two runners. This time, it was Carter McCulley and Brayden Dowd, with Brody DeLamielleure striking out to end the inning. FSU is 0-6 with runners on through two innings.

St. John’s left fielder Lewis Rodriguez had to leave the game in the bottom of the second inning when he went to catch a sinking line drive and hurt his leg, which appeared to get stuck in the ground. He was replaced by Dylan Fitzsimmons, who went to right field with Christian Bernardi sliding over to right.

The Seminoles appeared to be in trouble in the top of the second, but John Stuetzer threw one runner out at third before FSU got a double-play to end the inning when Bryson Moore got the strikeout, and Hunter Carns threw out the runner trying to steal second. St. John’s is typically very agressive on the bases.

John Stuetzer makes another great play for FSU

John Stuetzer has had a phenomenal start to the game. St. John’s tried to go first to third on a single to left with the runner stealing on the pitch, but Stietzer threw him out for the first out of the inning with a great throw.

Both teams have a leadoff homer now, with St John’s slugger Adam Agresti starting the second inning with a home run to dead center. It is his 18th homer of the season.
