Mike Norvell's defining season? Ranking FSU football's biggest 2026 games

Mike Norvell enters his seventh year in charge of Florida State football with one of the toughest schedules of his tenure, during arguably the most pressure-packed season of his career.

The Seminoles have a 3-13 record in the ACC over the last two seasons, which pairs with an overall record of 7-17 and no road victories. Not exactly the resume of a program like FSU, which expects consistent success and competition among the nation’s best, yet it’s the current reality.

FSU will have the talent to compete, headlined by Duce Robinson, Micahi Danzy, Tre Wisnor, Chris Jones and Ja’Bril Rawls, but can the team navigate the ebbs and flows of a season? It’s something Seminole teams in the last two seasons haven’t been able to do, but with 57 new players, the program has plenty of new blood and mindsets inside the building.

According to ESPN, the Seminoles’ strength of schedule (SOS) is ranked 22nd in the nation, with road trips to Alabama and Miami paired with home games against Clemson, SMU and Florida. Those are the biggest games on the schedule, so how will FSU fare against those opponents?

Here’s a ranking of the Seminoles’ most difficult and important games in the 2026 season.

1. Miami

2025 record: 13-3 (national runner-up)

2026 SOS: 45th

When: Saturday, Oct. 17 (Miami)

What to know: The Hurricanes rank as the toughest game for the Seminoles for obvious reasons. The national runner-ups, the program’s bitter rival, and a team that FSU hasn’t beaten in back-to-back years after rattling off a run of 10 wins in the prior 15 matchups, dating back to 2009. The game caps off a three-week stretch that features other matchups against Louisville and Virginia, and it could be a critical point in the season for Norvell.

2. Alabama

2025 record: 11-4 (CFP)

2026 SOS: 15th

When: Sat. Sep. 19 (Tuscaloosa)

What to know: An early-season test against Alabama is going to challenge the Seminoles, which will hope to spark the same magic the program had in last season’s season-opening win over the Tide. The likelihood of lightning striking twice is low, but FSU needs to perform, especially if it drops its game against SMU in week one.

3. SMU

2025 record: 9-4

2026 SOS: 51st

When: Monday, Sep. 7 (Tallahassee)

What to know: This will be the first meeting between the two programs in Tallahassee, and the Mustangs represent the first true benchmark for FSU in 2026 as one of the ACC title favorites with Miami. The Seminoles play Week 0 against New Mexico State, but the Labor Day showdown with SMU starts a run of seven games that will define FSU’s season, and potentially Norvell’s future.

4. Clemson

2025 record: 7-6

2026 SOS: 54th

When: Saturday, Oct. 31 (Tallahassee)

What to know: Let’s get spooky; the Clemson game for FSU will be the end of a potentially terrifying stretch that started with the game against SMU and ends with the Halloween showdown with the Tigers. Neither program had the season it wanted in 2025, and pressure is high on both coaches, Norvell and Dabo Swinney. This game could have major implications fr the future of two of the ACC’s top jobs, but for FSU at least, there are games before it that will greater impact on the program in 2026.

5. Florida

2025 record: 4-8

2026 SOS: Seventh

When: Friday, Nov. 27

What to know: The rivalry is arguably bigger than anything else that matters on the list, but the game against Florida is ranked fifth for us simply because it’s the final regular-season game. The Seminoles’ season will be dictated by the stretch it goes through in September and October. Now, success early could add more weight to this game, not that it needs any, but the Black Friday showdown with Florida may not hold as much weight for the future of the program in comparison to other games on the list.
