Marion County Athlete of the Week nominees, voting for Feb. 16-21

High school basketball season has officially come and gone in Marion County as the area’s surviving basketball teams were eliminated from the FHSAA playoffs over the weekend.

This leaves wrestling as the final sport from the winter season, while the spring sports season has officially commenced with local baseball, lacrosse and softball teams all logging games last week.

As such, this week’s Marion County Athlete of the Week poll has plenty of variety.

Trinity Catholic girls basketball’s Alessa Washington won last week’s vote with a convincing 7,410 votes — good for more than 70% of the vote.

Who will follow in her footsteps? It’s time to find out.

Below you’ll find 18 Ocala-area athletes who notched standout performances during the week of Feb. 16-21. Readers will have an opportunity to vote for who they believe is deserving of this week’s Athlete of the Week honor until Friday at noon. Voters are encouraged to vote early and often as there is no limit to the number of times you can vote.

Athlete of the Week nominees are compiled by what’s available on MaxPreps and by submission, so coaches, athletic directors and statisticians are encouraged to send nominees and their stats to ocalasports@usatodayco.com for consideration.
