Baylor football head coach Dave Aranda’s recent comments sparked online chatter after the Bears’ lead man suggested former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway has found more “freedom” since transferring.
Aranda said that Lagway appeared to be in a “straight jacket” during his time in orange and blue. He further characterized the former five-star prospect as someone who wanted to “play free.”
The statement came during Big 12 football media days, where the coach went on to praise the new addition under center, highlighting his demeanor and confidence since arriving in Waco, Texas. He described the QB as having renewed confidence, being engaged with teammates and smiling more.
Lagway decided to join the Bears just months ago after parting ways with UF. His departure came in the wake of a disappointing 4-8 season where the 20-year-old threw an SEC-worst 14 interceptions and was sacked 19 times. Aranda did not directly address Billy Napier or Florida by name, but many analysts interpret his words as a subtle dig at the program’s environment and how Lagway was utilized.
The former five-star prospect’s decision has brewed into one of the nation’s biggest narratives entering the 2026 season. Will the Gators end up better positioned after moving on from him and find a gem in transfer Aaron Philo, or will Florida regret letting a top-end talent dart to the Lone Star State?
