Troopers responded to Fair Haven Beach State Park in the village of Fair Haven around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, after receiving a report of a drowning in Little Sodus Bay.

According to State Police, the man entered the water from a boat to cool off. Due to high winds in the area Tuesday afternoon, the boat drifted away, leaving him unable to return to the vessel.

A 69-year-old woman then entered the water in an attempt to help the man after he went underwater and did not resurface, troopers said.

The woman was rescued by a nearby boater.
