Air quality alert NY: Smoke expected to worsen air in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for much of New York from midnight Wednesday through midnight Thursday as elevated levels of fine particulate pollution are expected across the state.

The advisory comes as smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to push air quality into unhealthy levels in many areas.

Air quality expected to worsen

The advisory is in effect from midnight Wednesday through midnight Thursday for much of western, central and parts of eastern New York.

Fine particulate pollution is forecast to reach:

An AQI above 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, while higher values pose increasing health risks.

The New York State Department of Health recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activity when pollution levels are elevated.

Anyone experiencing breathing difficulties or worsening symptoms should contact a health care provider.
