3 To Know: We ask, is it legal? When is the last day of school?

1. IS IT LEGAL?  Can I drive with my hazard lights on?

You’re driving, torrential rain is pounding on your windshield or you’re moving through thick, swirling fog and you want other vehicles to know you’re there. Can you turn on your hazard lights?

Until fairly recently, using your flashers for any reason other than to indicate an emergency in Florida was illegal and punishable as a moving violation.

But a 2021 bill changed that. Now you can hit that button with the triangle on it but only when driving in low-visibility conditions such as heavy rain, fog or smoke and only on roads with a posted speed limit of 55 mph or higher. – C. A. Bridges/USA TODAY Network-Florida

2. SCHOOL ON MEMORIAL DAY? When is the last day of classes?

If students were polled on which milestone school day is anticipated more, the first day of school or the last day of school, our guess is the latter would win in a landslide.

And with the calendar changing over to may, the anticipation for the last day of school in Collier County will start to ramp up.

Collier is one of 20 Florida counties that will end the 2025-26 school year on May 29.

In neighboring Lee County, the wait for starting summer vacation for students and teachers will be a little longer compared to Collier and other counties. Lee County is one of six out of Florida’s 67 counties to end the year in June. The last day of the 2025-26 school year for the Lee County School District is June 1.
