Woman who vanished while dirt biking at El Mirage Dry Lake found dead

The body of a 63-year-old Long Beach woman who disappeared while dirt biking at the El Mirage Dry Lake last week has been found in a remote desert area, authorities said.

Julie Elizabeth Goforth was reported missing after separating from her friends while riding dirt bikes at the popular off road area about 10:20 a.m. Friday, July 10, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Following a week of extensive searching, her remains were discovered about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, in a “remote desert area,” the agency said in a written statement. “The circumstances surrounding her death are being investigated.

“The Sheriff’s Department extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the statement said. “We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the OHV community and everyone who dedicated their time, resources, and support in the search efforts.”

“The compassion, concern, and commitment shown by community members serve as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from people coming together during difficult times,” the department added. “Your efforts were deeply valued and greatly appreciated.”

Goforth had been riding her Kawasaki KLX300R dirt bike in the dry lake with a friend when she decided to take a break and head back to their vehicle, sheriff’s officials said at the time.

But when the friend returned to the vehicle, there was no sign of Goforth or her dirt bike.

Authorities and community members launched an extensive search, fearing the missing woman was not equipped with water amid a sweltering heat wave.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Detective Harris of the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station at (760) 552-6800. Information may also be provided anonymously to the WeTip hotline at (844) 909-3096.
