There’s nothing quite like knowing about a gorgeous locale that few others seem to know about.
Luckily, the website Frugal Flyer is willing to give up some of the best “secret beaches.” Based on a survey of over 3,000 voters, Frugal Flyer released a list of the 95 best secret beaches in the United States.
And several are in California, including three in the top 10 in the nation.
“This summer, something different is happening. Instead of heading to the usual hotspots, Americans are rediscovering the quiet charm of their local, quieter, lesser-known shores,” the website said.
You’d expect California to be beach-heavy, but what’s interesting is that the Golden State beaches on the list are all relatively hard to access, whether by hike or minimal signage, Frugal Flyer reported. “These aren’t Malibu or Santa Monica – they’re for the travelers who value nature over scene, and seclusion over selfies,” the website observed.
What are California’s best-kept secret beaches?
According to Frugal Flyer, here are California’s best under-the-radar beaches to visit.
Going to the beach? Here are some safety tips
The American Red Cross recommends you swim with others and that there be at least one person on the shore, regardless of swimming experience or skill. Swimming alone means there’s no one around to help or call for help if there’s an accident or you’re in danger.
The Red Cross also recommends watching for rip currents, which push swimmers away from shore rather than toward it. If caught in a rip current, the best course of action may be to do nothing, wait until you’re out of the current, and then swim around the current and toward the shore. Those on the shore can throw the person a life jacket or call 911 for help.
Do not mix alcohol with swimming, diving, or boating. According to the United States Coast Guard, alcohol was the leading factor in water-related deaths, while operator inattention was the leading factor for water-related injuries.
