A Wisconsin high school sports moment made it onto ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day for the second day in a row.
On Friday, June 20, senior captain Sonoma Bever of Madison Edgewood High School made an “Olimpico” goal — bending the ball past the goalkeeper on a corner kick in overtime — in Edgewood’s game against Kiel High School. Edgewood went on to win the game 2-0.
Edgewood’s win will send Bever’s team to the WIAA Girls Soccer State Championship. Her play came in sixth place on ESPN’s list, four places ahead of Milwaukee Brewers phenom Jacob Misiorowski’s ankle-breaking strikeout of Willi Castro.
On June 19, Seymour High School’s Carson Staffeldt recorded the final out of the fourth inning against New Berlin Eisenhower when a line drive off the bat of Alex Michna lodged between Staffeldt’s right forearm and his body, sending the glove that had been attached to that hand flying.
Although Seymor lost to Eisenhower in the WIAA Division 2 state championship baseball game in Grand Chute, Staffeldt’s catch left the crowd with an unforgettable highlight, earning a place on ESPN’s list.
