Welcome to The Record’s weekly roundup.
Every week, The Record will deliver a quick-hit look at the past week’s sports action — the big games, the best performances and the storylines worth knowing. Baseball, softball and track will anchor the coverage, with other spring sports joining the mix when they make noise.
Track season can be packed with meets, so each week, first-place finishers from at least one competition will be spotlighted.
Call it a digest. Call it a highlight reel. Either way, it’s the fastest way to keep up with San Joaquin County sports without following every score or reading every recap.
Championship season has arrived.
Titles were won. Rivalries decided second place. One run changed entire seasons.
Some programs celebrated firsts, others kept the standard going and some still have their biggest games ahead.
With boys volleyball league play finished, this week also includes every league champion across the area.
That said, welcome to the April 20-25 roundup.
Baseball
Tokay 5, Edison 3 (April 20)
No rebuild has looked like Tokay’s. Twelve seniors graduated from last year’s SJAA championship team, and only four players returned. That made this all the more impressive. After a 9-1 loss to Edison on April 8, Tokay answered by coming back from three runs down to move within reach of back-to-back titles.
Manteca 3, East Union 2 (April 24)
Second place in the VOL. City bragging rights. It all came down to one run. After splitting the first two games — East Union winning 11-2 and Manteca returned the favor 14-1 — the finale decided everything. Jimmy Burns set the tone with five innings of no-hit baseball and finished with eight strikeouts, two hits allowed and two earned runs over six innings.
Lodi 7, Lincoln 6 (April 24)
Not the same rivalry, but the same finish. Second place in the TCAL came down to one run, just like Manteca and East Union in the VOL. Lodi took the opener 13-8, Lincoln won the second 4-3.
Ripon 5, Escalon 0 (April 24)
One week changed a whole lot. Escalon was one game back of first at 6-2. Two games against Ripon later, it was out. Ripon moved to 7-3 and second place — two games behind rival Ripon Christian, while helping push them closer to a title. Fabian Nuno finished it with a complete game, six strikeouts and seven hits allowed.
Edison 10, Franklin 2 (April 24)
Eighty-five years of school history. Forty-five years of baseball. More than 20 years of losing seasons. On senior night, at the home of the Stockton Ports, Edison finally claimed its first league championship in program history.
Softball
Venture Academy 28, ALHA 1 (April 20)
Yes, the score is ridiculous. Then it happened again. Just hours later, Venture Academy followed a 28-1 win with a 17-0 victory. The lopsided scores mattered, too, pushing Venture to 3-0 in CCAA play and closer to the program’s first league title.
Manteca 5, Oakdale 2 (April 23)
Round one belonged to Oakdale. Round two went the other way. After a 2-1 loss in the first meeting, Manteca evened it up behind a home run from Lauren Moncada, two RBIs each from Isabel Tonna and Na’ima Calderon, and a complete game from Tonna.
Escalon 11, Ripon 1 (April 24)
Spoiler season goes both ways. Ripon did it to Escalon in baseball, and Escalon returned the favor in softball. Ripon entered one game behind first-place Hughson at 7-1, with a showdown still ahead on April 28 and a fifth straight TVL title in sight.
Kimball 5, Lincoln 2 (April 25)
The complete games keep piling up. Briana Quintero made it seven, allowing two earned runs and striking out 10 as Kimball held onto second place in the TCAL at 8-3. Even more impressive, it marked seven straight games without allowing anything beyond a single.
Boys Volleyball
San Joaquin Athletic Association: Edison and Bear Creek share the league title at 13-1. For Edison, it marks the second league championship in school history. For Bear Creek, it is the first.
Tri-City Atlantic League: Shared at the top again. Lodi wins its second league title in school history, finishing 8-2 alongside Tracy. Just like 2023, it’s a shared crown — but for Tracy, it’s the program’s first.
Valley Oak League: Best in the county. Best in the VOL. Mountain House made it back-to-back league titles and is now perfect since joining the VOL in 2025, winning championships in both seasons. The 12-0 run also gives the program its third league title in four years.
Trans Valley League: Still unbeaten. Still untouchable. Ripon Christian has never lost a league game, now sitting at 66-0 combined after another 12-0 run this season. It is seven straight league titles without counting COVID-19 — eight straight with it.
Central California Athletic Alliance League: Only two years in, and River Islands already has its first league title.
