First responders will be setting up a staged deadly car wreck at Serrano High School in Phelan on Wednesday as part of an educational campaign to warn students of the dangers of DUI.

The California Highway Patrol’s long-running “Every 15 Minutes” program will take place over two days, from Wednesday, April 29, to Thursday, April 30, according to the CHP.

As part of the demonstration, a “simulated drunk driving crash” scene will be set up at the campus at Sheep Creek and Nelson roads, starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, organizers said.

The second day of the program includes a mock funeral and a student assembly.

“The mock crash will take place will take place for approximately one hour and there will be a high concentration of emergency vehicles accessing the scene from Sheep Creek Road,” CHP officials said in a written statement. “We would like to ensure the public is aware this is a mock emergency incident, and no real emergency actually exists.”

Participants will include the CHP, The Snowline School District Police Department, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, G&M Towing, Affordable Cremations and Burial and “many other community partners and affiliates,” the CHP stated.

Funding comes through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
