Southern California Football Roundtable: Over/under 28,000 attendance for UCLA game?

The UCLA Bruins have struggled to fill their seats at the Rose Bowl Stadium to start the season. It is unlikely that will change. They fell to 0-2 and return home for their upcoming game against the New Mexico Lobos on Friday, Sept. 12.

The season opener was reported to have over 35,000 fans in attendance, but the numbers were disputed by the LA Times. Either way, the attendance was significantly low for one of the largest venues in college football. With that in mind, the Southern California Football Roundtable discussed whether the Bruins will have over or under 28,000 fans in attendance for New Mexico.

Under. There were around 28,000 fans for the Utah game, and that was with a good chunk of Ute fans in attendance. This is a Friday night against a not-very-good Mountain West opponent. UCLA is 0-2. The team is in shambles and playing horribly. I don’t see how the attendance figure reaches 28,000. The Dodgers are not playing a home game, but even then, I don’t think fans will flock to Pasadena for a bad product.

Definitely under 28,000 fans in attendance this week for UCLA. The Bruins have been underperforming and even at the season opener, fans didn’t show up for the mess of a roster that DeShaun Foster put together. After two miserable losses, it’s tough to see fans piling out money to watch another messy loss for the Bruins.

My prediction is that there will be much fewer than 28,000 fans in attendance but UCLA’s announced attendance will be over 28,000. No, UCLA Athletics isn;t counting the empty seats in the Rose Bowl, but if you count the players, staff and media you’re able to dress up the numbers a good bit. The Los Angeles Times highlighted the difference between UCLA’s announced attendance and the live scan of actual number of fans, and it’s a stark difference in the two totals.

Announced attendance: Over 28,000

Actual attendance: Under 28,000 (by a sizable margin)

I think it will be under 28,000. This is a team that has already tooken the excitement for this season away from their fans. They still have to go against Ohio State and Penn State. I don’t see the fans showing up to the level they use to before for this team this year.
