A San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a person Tuesday while responding to a disturbance in the Stockton area.
The sheriff’s office said deputies responded at about 11:30 a.m. to the area of Moon Avenue on a report of a disturbance. When deputies arrived, they said a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the incident had fled the location.
A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle at the intersection of Wisconsin and Michigan avenues.
Deputies said when they contacted the driver, who was the only person in the car, a deputy allegedly observed the person in possession of “what appeared to be a firearm.”
The deputy fired his firearm and struck the person, the sheriff’s office said. Medical aid was given to the person who was taken to a hospital.
The sheriff’s office said the person was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“Please understand that this is an active investigation, and we are unable to release further information at this time,” the sheriff’s office said. “We appreciate the community’s cooperation and patience as investigators work to gather the facts surrounding this incident.”
The sheriff’s office said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
