Authorities have identified a man, woman and 7-year-old girl who were killed in a rollover crash along the 15 Freeway in Yermo on Monday afternoon.
Karen Perez, 33, William Hernandez, 35, and Adelyn Hernandez, 7, all of Los Angeles, were killed in the crash, which took place about 12:50 p.m. June 22 on the northbound 15 Freeway near Calico Road, according to California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.
The group was traveling north in the left-hand lane in a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban prior to the crash, according to the CHP. A 2017 Toyota RAV4 was traveling ahead of them.
“For unknown reasons, the driver allowed the Chevrolet to travel at an unsafe speed toward the rear of [the Toyota],” CHP officials said in a written statement.
The driver then veered right in an attempt to avoid a collision, sending the SUV across the right-hand lane and into the asphalt shoulder, officials said.
“The driver of the Chevrolet input an unsafe steering movement to the left, causing the Chevrolet to enter an overturning sequence,” the statement said. While tumbling, the Chevrolet struck the right, front side of the Toyota.
The driver of the Chevrolet, along with two passengers, were thrown from the SUV during the crash, according to the CHP. They were not wearing seat belts. All three died from their injuries at the scene.
A 77-year-old woman and a girl who were also riding as passengers in the SUV were hospitalized with injuries described as “major” and “moderate,” respectively. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Two French bulldogs survived the crash, according to CHP logs.
An elderly Hesperia man and woman inside the Toyota were not hurt, officials added.
DUI was not suspected to be a factor in the wreck.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information, can reach the CHP’s Barstow Area Office at (760) 255-5900.
