Rams were targeting two tight ends after trading out of the first round

After getting an offer they (practically) couldn’t refuse for the 26th overall pick, the Los Angeles Rams traded out of the first round completely. They moved back 20 spots to No. 46 overall in a deal with the Falcons that included Atlanta’s 2026 first-round pick and selected Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson, a player Sean McVay says they have “big plans for.”

They also had their eye on another tight end after moving back from No. 26.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Rams were also targeting LSU tight end Mason Taylor. A source from the Rams told Fowler that the team preferred Ferguson to Taylor, who was selected 42nd overall by the Jets. So it seems either way, they would’ve taken Ferguson at No. 46.

The Rams traded out of the first round with two tight ends in mind — Oregon’s Terrance Ferguson and LSU’s Mason Taylor. They would have been happy with either player, but one team source insists Ferguson was top in that order, so he would have been the pick if Taylor had been there. (Taylor went four spots earlier to the Jets.)

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah linked Mason to the Rams just before the draft, saying he “wouldn’t sleep on” Los Angeles taking the LSU tight end in the first round. They had the opportunity to do so, but they obviously passed on him and opted to trade with the Falcons instead.

Both Ferguson and Taylor are talented pass-catching tight ends, but it’s Ferguson who tested as the best player at his position in the entire class at the combine. He’s a superior athlete and was a prolific receiver in college, holding the Oregon record for the most receptions (134) and touchdown catches (16) by a tight end.
