Willie Lampkin won’t get another chance to prove himself to the Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff before final roster cuts.
Sean McVay told reporters on Tuesday that Lampkin suffered a knee injury and sprained ankle in Week 2 of the preseason, which will cause him to miss “a few weeks.” Considering the Rams must cut their roster down to 53 players by Aug. 26, Lampkin won’t practice or play in the final preseason game before then.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Lampkin, a standout player for Los Angeles this preseason. Despite being undersized as an interior lineman, he was dominant against the Cowboys in the preseason opener and saw limited playing time on Saturday against the Chargers due to injury.
Lampkin can only hope he did enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
The Rams signed him as an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina this offseason. He was a stud for the Tar Heels in the last two years, allowing zero sacks in pass protection. He’s got the tools to be an NFL lineman, but it remains to be seen if the Rams can look past his smaller 5-foot-10, 270-pound frame.
