New online map tracks where housing is going up in Salinas

A new city of Salinas website gives the public near real-time insight into local housing production.

The Housing Production Dashboard launched Tuesday, May 12 is designed to be “a centralized, interactive platform,” according to the news release, converting “complex housing data into clear, accessible visuals.”

The dashboard has been in the works for several months and consolidates data from multiple reports and systems.

On the new platform members of the public can monitor housing production by affordability level (above moderate, moderate, low income, very low income) and project statues (entitled, permitted and completed), track the city’s progress towards meeting state housing goals and view development trends across Salinas, including future growth areas.

The city is required by the state to meet certain housing goals.

Through 2024, the city has permitted just over 3% of the 6,674 units required under its Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA), which is currently in its sixth cycle (2023-2031), according to the dashboard. The minimum units required across all Monterey Bay Area Governments is 33,274.

City officials maintain the new housing portal “strengthens accountability through public transparency and alignment with state housing laws.”
