The Oxnard Police Department is investigating a shooting by one of its officers early June 17.
An Oxnard officer attempted to make a traffic stop of a car around 4:49 a.m., but the driver did not pull over, said Cmdr. Jose Velasquez. Instead, a brief pursuit ensued.
At some point, officers tried to detain a man who was then shot by an officer in the 3400 block of Neap Place, Velasquez said. The man was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, the police commander said.
The neighborhood is on the west side of Oxnard, off Victoria Avenue and near Channel Islands Harbor.
It was not immediately known how long the pursuit lasted, but Velasquez said it started and ended in Oxnard. No officer was injured, he added.
Velasquez could not say if there were other people in the vehicle or if more than one officer used a weapon.
No other suspects were at large, he said. It was not immediately known if the person shot had a weapon.
As of 8:30 a.m. officers were still at the scene conducting their investigation, Velasquez said.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Cmdr. Dale McAlpine at 805-385-7605 or dale.mcalpine@oxnardpd.org.
The last shooting by an officer in Oxnard was April 20 after a man wielding a machete inside a restaurant on Saviers Road failed to heed multiple commands by officers.
