An Apple Valley man died after being struck by a pickup truck while riding in a motorized shopping cart along Dale Evans Parkway on Tuesday night, officials said.
The collision took place about 8:40 p.m. at Dale Evans Parkway and Zuni Road, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department logs.
Sheriff’s officials initially described the vehicle the man was riding as a scooter, but agency spokeswoman Taylor Reynolds later clarified that it was a shopping cart affixed with a motor.
Thev victim, described as a 53-year-old Apple Valley man, was headed north along Dale Evans Parkway prior to the crash, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a written statement.
A 2002 Mazda B-Series pickup truck being driven by a 49-year-old Barstow man, was also traveling in the northbound lane, officials said.
“The vehicle struck the pedestrian from behind and stayed at the scene,” the statement said. ” The driver of the Mazda cooperated with the investigation.”
Paramedics took the badly injured victim to a hospital, but he could not be saved, authorities said. His name was not released pending notification of family by coroner’s officials.
The cause and circumstances of the collision remained under investigation by a Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
Officials shut down the intersection for about four hours as they gatehred evidence.
