Jackie, the rescued bald eagle and mate of Shadow from Big Bear, is underweight, alert, perching and eating with assistance, according to the Ojai Raptor Center.
The center delivered that message to Friends of Big Bear Valley, who reported on Monday that the Ventura County-based rehab center had not yet received Jackie’s medical test results, but was expected to within the next couple of days.
Jackie’s altercation and rescue
After being rescued over the weekend from an area near the eagle’s nest in the San Bernardino Mountains, Jackie was transported to the San Dimas Raptor Rescue before being moved to the Ojai Raptor Center on Saturday afternoon.
Jennifer Voisard, the media manager for FOBBV, said an unidentified adult eagle, later confirmed as Jackie, was observed on the ground on July 17, near Dana Point Park.
The adult eagle was also observed near the park the previous day, she said.
“Later, that eagle was seen in a short ground altercation with two other subadult eagles,” FOBBV stated. ”Cell phone video confirmed that the adult was able to fend off the other eagles by turning over and using its talons, but was unable to fly far away.”
‘Jackie’s angels’
On Monday, FOBBV shared further details about the individuals who saw the adult eagle on the ground and stayed in the area to make sure the bird was safe.
“They tried contacting several agencies for help with no response,” FOBBV said. “One individual went to the local San Bernardino County Fire station in Fawnskin and reported the situation.”
Fire Capt. Dennis Jones and his team responded to the call and contacted the San Dimas Raptor Rescue, from the County of Los Angeles Parks & Recreation, the nonprofit said.
Jones and his team stayed with Jackie to protect her from other wildlife and human interference until 2 a.m., when the rescue team arrived.
“Jackie’s angels” is the term Voisard and her team used to describe the individuals, fire department and rescue agencies that came to Jackie’s support and rescue.
Shadow does dad duty
Since Jackie’s rescue, the 24-hour online stream, operated by FOBBV, showed the eagle family nest vacant at times.
The camera captured Shadow and the couple’s young eaglets, Luna and Sandy, coming and going from the nest, often appearing with a captured fish.
Perched alone near the nest, Luna and Sandy were often heard screeching as they looked out over the lake and valley.
Supporting the rescue, rehab centers
FOBBV shared online links for those who would like to show their monetary appreciation to the rescue and rehab centers.
“Both organizations have asked that you follow social media for updates,” FOBBV stated. “Please do not call, text, or email as it takes away their ability to care for Jackie and other raptors.”
