Kesha recalls 'punk rock' and 'trashy' nights at Pappy and Harriet's

The high desert’s most famous music venue got a special shoutout on a popular podcast this week.

On the Wednesday, July 15, episode of “Las Culturistas,” — the award-winning pop culture podcast hosted by former “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang and actor/comedian/singer Matt Rogers — Pappy & Harriet’s was discussed as the site where a certain popstar got into many shenanigans.

“TiK ToK” singer Kesha, Wednesday’s guest on the podcast, brought up the famous Pioneertown music venue when discussing the evolution of her career, noting that it’s where she did a photoshoot on a motorcycle ahead of her “Animal” album release.

“Before ‘TiK ToK,’ I used to go out to Pappy and Harriet’s with the homies in Joshua Tree … do you know this dive bar?” Kesha said at the 1 hour, 40 second mark of the episode. Yang and Rogers admitted they weren’t aware of the business, so the singer went on to describe it.

“This is where I did my first photoshoot for the cover of ‘Animal,'” she added. “At this dive bar in the middle of the desert in Joshua Tree. It’s like a biker bar … a lot has happened at this place. It’s amazing.”

She went on to say it’s the first place she ever “ate” a certain substance, and the first place she ever “saw spaceships.”

“There’s like this whole crew of very cool, very punk rock people that would always go out (there),” she added. “It was a vibe. It was in the desert, it was like a little trashy, it was a little dangerous — it was kinda crazy.”

So, has Kesha ever performed at the music venue/BBQ restaurant? Technically, yes, but she’s never been on an official lineup.

As reported by former Desert Sun journalist Bruce Fessier in 2014, Ted Quinn’s Monday Open Mic night used to draw dozens of singers of all varieties and quality, including occasional drop-ins from artists like Kesha.
