Paulina Lucero was named the MVP of the field events at the Desert Valley League track and field finals last year. But she still wasn’t satisfied.
The Coachella Valley High School senior returned to the DVL track and field finals this week with a school record in mind. Anything less, she said, wouldn’t be enough.
On Thursday, she got the school record in the triple jump, with a distance of 35-feet-11.25 inches and again claimed MVP honors in the field events.
“It’s been a good day,” Lucero said. She also took first in the long jump (17 feet).
Coachella Valley’s Fernando Avina, who won the boys’ field events MVP last year, also repeated as MVP of the field events on Thursday. He won the boys’ triple jump (43-11.25) and long jump (21-05.25).
Indio junior Damian Durinzi won the boys’ MVP for the track events, winning both the boys’ 110 hurdles (15.42) and the boys’ 400 meters (49.63). Coachella Valley sophomore Jaylynn Hernandez was named the girls’ track MVP after winning the girls’ 100 meters (12.53) and placing first and setting a new school record in the girls’ 200 meters (25.96).
Lucero and Hernandez led the Arabs to a win in the girls’ 4×100 relay, breaking the school record with a time of 51.24. Thursday was a huge day for Coachella Valley High track and field.
“This group has a lot to be excited about,” Arabs coach Bill Johnson said.
Of note, junior Ian Jarrett of Yucca Valley ran a 10.80 100 meters, which was just why of a personal record but still one of the fastest times ever for a sprinter in the valley.
