A fire in a residential unit of the Palm Springs Homeless Navigation Center was put out within minutes Saturday, according to Palm Springs Fire.
The agency said the fire, which was burning in what was described as a single unit on the second floor of a building that is part of the facility at 3589 McCarthy Road, was first reported at around 8:20 a.m.
An arriving unit found the fire in a small room and was able to extinguish it in about seven minutes. Firefighters also rescued a puppy from the unit. No one, including the puppy, was injured.
Two neighboring units also sustained water damage in the fire, and the city said it was working with the facility’s managers to “ensure all safety protocols are in place.” The department also said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
The navigation center, which opened last year, is a multifaceted facility that includes a 50-bed homeless shelter and 80 transitional housing units, as well as facilities where people receive various services oriented around helping them transition out of homelessness.
