In his first media availability with the Chargers, tight end David Njoku shared his excitement for a fresh start after nine seasons with the Browns. The 30-year-old signed a one-year deal worth up to $8 million and quickly settled into the offseason program.
“I’m just really happy to be here… just really excited to get this going,” Njoku said, adding that the first 36 hours were the hardest part to get acclimated with the new facility and routine.
Njoku joins the Bolts with 384 receptions for 4,062 yards and 34 touchdowns. He has proven to be a dominant force inside the 20-yard line, as he has scored 26 touchdowns inside the red zone.
Njoku highlighted the appeal of joining an offense led by quarterback Justin Herbert and coordinated by Mike McDaniel.
“I’ve played against him, and I’ve seen what he can do,” Njoku said about Herbert. “So, I’m glad that I’m on his side now… That is one of the main reasons why I signed.” He added he hopes Herbert becomes the best quarterback he’s ever played with.
Regarding McDaniel, Njoku said: “Mike McDaniel is good… We see the funny stuff but when it’s time to work, he’s down to work.” He described the decision as a “cumulative of things,” including Herbert, McDaniel, and head coach Jim Harbaugh, calling it the best overall fit.
As a veteran, Njoku aims to provide leadership in a competitive tight end room with Oronde Gadsden II and Charlie Kolar. His addition bolsters an already potent Chargers attack, offering Herbert another reliable target for the upcoming season.
“I feel like we can be destructive,” Njoku said. “We got the tools, we got the keys, we got the players to do it all. It’s up to us to put it all together.”
