Donald Trump California approval rating polls: After 'Big Beautiful Bill' becomes law

President Donald Trump signed his sweeping tax and spending bill into law on the Fourth of July. The passage of the Republicans’ “Big Beautiful Bill” represented a significant victory for Trump, whose party controls the executive and legislative branches of government.

California Republican representatives in the U.S. House mostly celebrated the news. “Today, we delivered on an America First legislative agenda, which includes major wins for rural America and the West. Importantly, this bill keeps taxes in check while maintaining deductions for farms and other businesses that reinvest in their own equipment and production,” said Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale). Others were less enthusiastic. “It was not an easy decision for me, but I voted yes on the budget reconciliation bill,” said Congressman David Valadao (R-Hanford)

California Democrats struck a different chord. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said, “Today is a dark and harrowing time for America’s children, seniors, Veterans, working families, and the most vulnerable in our nation. The Republicans’ Big, Ugly Bill is the biggest transfer of money in history to the wealthy and well-connected.”

But what do the voters think? Here’s a roundup of the latest approval rating polls from California and the United States, tracking Trump’s job performance.

What is Donald Trump’s approval rating in California?

A majority of California voters have consistently disapproved of Trump’s job performance since he re-entered the White House in January.

Daily tracking from the polling company Civiqs shows that 67% of California voters disapprove of how Trump is doing his job as president as of July 7. The president’s approval rating stood at 31%, and 3% said they neither approve nor disapprove of his handling of his duties.

On June 26, a Public Policy Institute of California poll found Trump’s approval rating in California stands at 29% among California adults and 34% among likely voters.

What is Trump’s approval rating in the United States?

An Economist/YouGov poll conducted from July 4 to July 7 shows that 53% disapprove of Trump’s performance as president, while 42% approve of the job he’s doing. About 5% were “not sure.”

A Morning Consult survey updated on July 7 shows that 52% disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 45% of voters approve. “His net approval rating is just shy of a record low we measured two weeks ago and in late April,” the company said.

What was Trump’s approval rating at the end of his first term?

Trump ended his first term in the White House with an approval rating of 34%, according to daily tracking by Gallup.

What was the final approval rating for former presidents?

According to the American Presidency Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara, these were the final approval ratings for past U.S. presidents:

Are presidential approval ratings accurate?

Gallup notes that these approval ratings are a “simple measure, yet a very powerful one that has played a key role in politics for over 70 years.”

A president’s approval rating reflects the percentage of Americans polled who approve of the president’s performance. Anything can impact a president’s rating, such as legislation passed, actions, and elections.

According to ABC News, an approval rating doesn’t just represent how well the administration is doing for the general public. It can determine the outcome of an upcoming election for a politician or how much they get done during their time in office.

While these ratings are easy to understand, Quorum says some analysts believe they are not as useful as they once were due to extreme partisanship and the polarized political climate.

“Presidential approval ratings have always been partisan, with members of the president’s party offering more positive assessments than those in the opposing party,” according to the Pew Research Center. “But the differences between Republicans and Democrats on views of the president have grown substantially in recent decades.”
