When Pro Football Focus released its top-32 running back rankings ahead of the 2026 season, it should not have been a surprise to see San Francisco 49ers superstar Christian McCaffrey near the apex at No. 4. Now 30 years old, McCaffrey remains a generational anomaly in the league and consistently proves to be a true multidimensional weapon.
McCaffrey is the gold standard when it comes to receiving ability at the running back position. He led all backs with 924 receiving yards in 2025, the fourth time he’s paced the league in that statistic across his nine-year career. McCaffrey’s 5,390 career receiving yards are already sixth all time at the position.
He’s no slouch when it comes to running the ball, either. In 2025, McCaffrey was seventh in the NFL with 859 yards after contact while running for over 1,000 yards for the fifth time in his career.
Beyond those metrics, McCaffrey’s traditional box score numbers from the 2025 campaign paint an equally staggering picture. He served as the undisputed engine of the San Francisco offense, pacing the entire NFL with 413 total touches from scrimmage. On the ground, he accumulated 1,202 rushing yards and found the end zone 10 times. Through the air, he was practically a wide receiver, hauling in 102 receptions for those 924 yards and an additional seven receiving touchdowns.
This sustained excellence is exactly why the rest of the league remains terrified of him. In an annual ESPN survey ranking the top running backs by executives, coaches, and scouts, McCaffrey secured the No. 4 spot overall as well, proving that league insiders still view him as one of the ultimate chess pieces in football despite his age.
McCaffrey’s high-level execution has clearly rubbed off on those who shared a meeting room with him. The PFF list provided a distinct nod to the depth of talent he has mentored, featuring two of his former 49ers backups as prominent honorable mentions: Jordan Mason, who took his physical rushing style to the Minnesota Vikings, and Brian Robinson Jr., who now brings a bruising presence to the Atlanta Falcons after serving as McCaffrey’s primary backup in 2025.
Despite his age, McCaffrey remains at the top of his craft heading into 2026. And the 49ers will likely continue to lean on their star running back for now and in the future.
