Apple Valley seniors get creative turning old boots into planters

A group of seniors at Whispering Winds of Apple Valley repurposed old boots as part of their National Plant a Flower Day celebration.

The seniors transformed their boots into flower vases and planters during the eco-friendly craft project that honors the annual floral day which welcomes the spring season.

Whispering Winds officials said residents designed their own vases, giving each boot its own personality through flower selection and creative arrangement.

Bright petals emerged from the tops of the boots, creating one-of-a-kind planters that combined gardening with repurposing.

“Each boot came out different because residents picked their own flowers and arranged them however they wanted. The personality in each one is fantastic,” said Jeff Gollihar, executive director at Whispering Winds of Apple Valley.

National Plant a Flower Day

National Plant a Flower Day, which encourages people nationwide to plant flowers on March 12, has little history of the day’s origin.

The special day is closely tied to the spring season and is meant to celebrate the importance of flowers and their impact on the ecosystem, medicine, and food.

What is the state flower of California?

The national flower of the U.S. is the rose. President Ronald Reagan declared the flower the national floral emblem of the U.S. in 1986.

The state flower is the California Golden Poppy. The orange-colored flower is protected and been deemed illegal to harm, according to the Capitol Museum website.

The poppy has become synonymous with the superbloom, which sees wildflowers spring up across the state after bouts of winter rain.
