The Siskiyou County District Attorney’s Office was reviewing a complaint filed by the sheriff’s office in a case out of Dunsmuir in which several students fell ill and had to be treated at a hospital after they unknowingly ingested homemade cannabis-laced cookies that a teacher left out in a classroom.
That same teacher also partook, became sick and had to be taken to the hospital for medical care, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office announced on June 5 that detectives lodged the complaint with the DA’s office and encouraged anyone who had information about the case to come forward.
The agency did not release any names concerning the matter, what charges if any it recommended or the number of students who were treated at the hospital.
The incident happened on Monday, June 1 at Dunsmuir Elementary School. Administrators reported it to law enforcement the next day after discovering that at the hospital, the teacher and some of the students tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis responsible for changing how the mind works.
School officials told the sheriff’s office the teacher left the cookies out in a common area of the classroom during a morning break. Later that day, the students and teacher were evaluated at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff’s investigators were able to confirm those cookies in the classroom contained THC.
Detectives last week followed up with students and their families to determine how many were exposed to the cannabis product.
Anyone with information on this case can contact the sheriff’s office at 530 841-2900 and ask to speak to detective Thomas, the agency said.
