73-year-old dies while diving off the Anacapa Island coast

A 73-year-old man died off the coast of Anacapa Island, part of Channel Islands National Park, while scuba diving on May 28.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 9:45 a.m. that a man was with a scuba dive operator when he suffered a medical emergency in the water near Inspiration Point, said sheriff’s Capt. Mike McConville.

The master diver leading the trip in the water noticed the man was “having a medical emergency” and pulled the man up to a nearby boat, McConville said. Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ventura County Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were also dispatched to assist with the incident.

The sheriff’s office does not suspect foul play, the captain said.
